GSKyTeach Paid Internship/Employment Opportunity

UPDATE: The application deadline has been extended to April 1, 2012.

I am sure you are aware that our nation’s public schools have a great need for talented and highly-trained science and mathematics teachers.  To help address this need, Western Kentucky University has developed an exciting and innovative federally-funded program called GSKyTeach.

GSKyTeach is a graduate-level residency program designed to prepare physics, chemistry, and mathematics majors with Bachelor’s degrees to become teachers in a unique partnership between WKU and Jefferson County (Louisville), KY public schools.

GSKyTeachers complete a Master of Arts in Education with 30 semester hours of tuition-free coursework and earn $30,500 (plus benefits) while learning how to teach secondary mathematics or science in high need high school in Louisville, KY.  Lodging is provided during the summer residency program at WKU.  GSKyTeach intern teachers provide instruction the guidance of Mentor teachers on site at high-need high schools.  GSKyTeachers prepare for teaching alongside a cohort of professional peers in an exciting, inquiry-based teaching and learning program.

After one year as graduate residents, successful candidates will be employed as full-time, certified teachers in the Jefferson County, KY public schools and must commit to teaching three years in a high-need high school.  GSKyTeachers receive ongoing support from a mentoring team consisting of a Master Teacher in their content area, their high school principal, and WKU GSKyTeach faculty.  By sharing their love for science and math, GSKyTeachers make a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged youth.

This is an amazing opportunity for interested math, chemistry, or physics majors.  I am attaching our brochure that describes the program and our website (http://edtech.wku.edu/gskyteach), which has an online application.  Could you please forward this information to any students you think would be interested?

If you have any questions, please contact me, or our Program Coordinator, Donna Kasznel (donna.kasznel@wku.edu, 270-745-2022).

Sincerely,

Martha M. Day, Ed.D.
