WHO IS FDA?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is one of the Nation’s oldest and most respected consumer protection agencies. Simply stated it’s mission is to :

  • To promote and protect the public health by helping safe and effective products reach the market in a timely way
  • To monitor products for continued safety after they are in use
  • To help the public get the accurate, science-based information needed to improve healthEvery day, every American comes in contact with a host of FDA-regulated products.  In fact, FDA-regulated products account for about 25 cents of every consumer dollar spent.  Regulated products include:  Food, Cosmetics, Biologics, Human Drugs, Veterinary Products, Medical Devices, Radiation Emitting Electronic Products, and Tobacco Products.That include at least 30 semester hours in one or a combination of science courses and/or specialized experience to demonstrate particular knowledge and skills.  Science courses include the following and others:
    • Biologics
    • Chemistry
    • Epidemiology
    • Food technology
    • Nutrition
    • Nursing 
  • Requirements of the position:
    • Medical science
    • Engineering
    • Veterinary Science
    • Pharmacy
    • Physical sciences

  • The FDA is looking for individuals with Science Based Degrees:
    • Must be a U.S. citizen
    • This position has a minimum education requirement
    • Will be required to complete a background investigation
    • Must operate a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid driver’s license

Hiring Expectations at Independent/Private Schools

  • Schools focus on academic credentials and on skills in communicating and building relationships with teenagers.  Many new STA teacher candidates are experienced camp counselors and recreation league coaches.
  • A degree in secondary/science education and some student-teaching experience can be advantageous, but they aren’t prerequisites.  Schools hire Chemistry majors to teach Chemistry, and they provide new faculty members with ongoing support and professional development.
  • Candidates for these teaching positions generally have GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
