Title:  Lab Technician

Rapid Cycle, Standard Cycle, Performance Bench Testing

Department:  Blend Test Services (BTS)                     Reports to:  BTS Resource Manager

The Lab Technician in the Blend Test Services Department is responsible for all facets of testing from the set-up and take-down to reporting of results. The majority of the workday is spent in a laboratory environment working with new and used oils, solvents, chemicals and equipment utilized to complete testing. This person is responsible for ensuring safety, adherence to ISO guides and good housekeeping practices during daily operations.



  • Conduct quality tests following work procedures and ISO guidelines. Reference appropriate resource documents
  • Enter and upload test data into Excel or other internal
  • Understand and perform testing calculations. Identify and resolve incorrect calculations and process the calculations by alternative means if necessary. Recognize and correct data inconsistencies before
  • Plot reference data on control charts. Understand control charting and when to investigate potential issues. Identify, troubleshoot, and work closely with customers to resolve issues or problems. Appropriately elevate a situation to supervisor and/or customer when
  • Recognize priority conflicts of testing; prioritize and communicate test schedules to customers. Perform multiple tests at a
  • Facilitate sample flow between work area and other areas in the department. Communicate issues to appropriate
  • Recognize validity of test data. Notify supervisor regarding non-conformances and be able to identify root causes of inconsistent test data. Perform routine troubleshooting and repair on tests and
  • Articulate and communicate testing issues to co-worker, supervisor, and customer. Provide timely status updates. Work with customers on special requests. Follow-up on customer questions or
  • Actively participate with contributions to safety, housekeeping, environmental, accomplishments and process improvement
  • Update work instructions and procedures as necessary; forward recommended changes to area document controller. Maintain thorough documentation and associated information following ISO
  • Move and cross-train to help areas of highest need focusing on overall group

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications


  • High School
  • BA/BS in a Science related field (Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or Geology) may be
  • College chemistry or equivalent science
  • One year lab experience in industry or academic
  • Working knowledge of statistics
  • Computer skills (MS Office). Knowledge of web-enabled Mainframe applications; Scheduler/Inventory, Measurements, Lab Messenger, Information Warehouse and
  • Track record of customer service; effective verbal and written communication skills and an ability to communicate with colleagues and internal/external
  • Project Management skills; experienced with managing projects and organizing significant volume of work; experienced in prioritizing and managing customer
  • Understand and exhibit safe laboratory practices and lab safety programs. .
  • General knowledge and/or awareness of control charting and ISO
