Visiting Organic Chemistry Professor – Kalamazoo College

Greetings from Kalamazoo. I am writing to you on behalf of Dr. Laura Furge to share with you an advertisement for a one-year visiting professor of organic chemistry. One of our organic chemists will be on sabbatical next year in Czech Republic and we are searching for a one-year replacement. Please share the attached ad with individuals who might be interested in our position.

Some quick highlights about the College and our Chemistry Program:

Kalamazoo College is a small, nationally-recognized liberal arts college with an emphasis on experiential education.  Over 80% of our students spend 3-6 months abroad during their junior year. The completion of both comprehensive examinations in the major discipline and a Senior Individualized Project (SIP) or thesis caps every student’s education, and many of our graduates go on to earn advanced degrees.  According to a 2012 study by the Higher Education Data Sharing consortium (HEDS), over all disciplines, Kalamazoo College ranked 19th among 225 private colleges and universities in the proportion of graduates earning PhDs.  In chemistry, we rank 6th, and in biological sciences, 10th. We have ~50 chemistry majors in our senior class and ~68 in our junior class! Our faculty are engaged with various evidenced based teaching methods including flipped lectures, clickers, POGIL, problem based learning, inquiry based laboratory projects, etc.  Thus, our program is strong, and a visiting professor could learn a great deal about elements of a successful chemistry program that would benefit them in future job applications.

Thank you for your time. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Laura Furge or myself.
