Postdoc opportunity for graducate students – polymer synthesis

Title: Post-Doctoral Researcher – Polymer Synthesis

Department: National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), U.S. Department of Energy

Position information: Full-time, one year appointments, with the possibility of extension.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA or Morgantown, WV

Who may be considered:  US Citizens, LPRs, & Foreign Nationals with appropriate approval

The Carbon capture group at NETL is seeking highly motivated post-doctoral or early career researchers with expertise in polymer synthesis – particularly in the specialized research and development of polymer synthesis for membrane applications. The candidate must possess significant knowledge and practical experience in materials design, synthesis, and characterization. The selected candidate will work closely with the carbon capture team as well as other researchers at NETL to understand the properties needed to develop polymer membranes for CO2 capture.

Specifically the selected applicant will:

  • Synthesize the polymers with high gas permeability and selectivity
  • Utilize the structure-property relationships, design novel polymers with CO2-philic groups while having good processability
  • Characterize the polymers using various techniques such as NMR, IR, GPC, rheological properties, microscopy, thermal analysis, mechanical analysis, etc.
  • Collaborate within NETL as well as with University partners
  • Prepare reports, publications, and present the work both internally and externally in conferences

To be successful in this position, you must have:

  • A PhD in polymer science, chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience with polymer synthesis and characterization, with a history of relevant journal publications and conference presentations
  • In-depth knowledge of organic chemistry, polymer synthesis and modification reactions, and behavior of polymers in solutions
  • Experience with processing of polymers
  • Capable of working independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team and demonstrating good decision-making abilities
  • An outstanding level of motivation and self-sufficiency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to represent our research team effectively both internally and externally, including at conferences or other meetings

Southern Teachers: Science Teachers Needed!

The end of another academic year is upon us!  If you have graduating chemistry students who

  • are still seeking jobs
  • have performed well academically
  • relate well to others
  • are hard-working and responsible

then please consider forwarding this message, because we have over 150 openings for science teachers at private & independent K-12 schools around the South.

Since 1902, schools have trusted Southern Teachers to help them find great teachers, and as a result they pay for our work.  Consequently, our services are entirely free to candidates, i.e., your students.

It’s important to note that independent schools do not necessarily require teacher certification.  Therefore, these schools can hire chemistry majors who have not gone through a teacher-training program.

You or your students may read more about Southern Teachers and our services here.  Interested candidates should apply via our website.

Thank you very much for your consideration.
