Conversations on Protein Structure and Function (PHOL 456) Fall 2016

and others with background in physical-chemical sciences and strong interest in protein structure and

biophysics by permission)

The goal of this course is to provide an in-depth introduction of research areas and discussion on

current topics for students with backgrounds in physical-chemical sciences and/or to students who

already have a good basic background in protein science.

The course presents a overview of Protein structure/function. Following an introduction to/revision

of the principles of protein structure, the physical basis of protein folding and stability, and a brief

overview of structural and bioinformatics approaches to protein analysis is presented. Typically two

lecture/discussion style presentations are followed by a student lead journal club on recent high

profile papers. The way the Journal club is done is that one student presents a paper (background and

figures in powerpoint slides) while presentation of the main figures is shared between the class.

Papers and Figures will be assigned by instructor. Typically two papers will be presented per session.

Position Overview
The Chemist will be responsible for the chemical analysis of submitted refractory
samples, managing the analytical chemistry laboratory, supervising technicians,
standardization and calibrations for all analytical instruments as well as maintaining a
safe working environment in the chemical laboratory. The candidate will also be required
to act as coordinator of third party laboratories when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
• Develop techniques for analysis of refractory ceramic samples submitted to the
lab for understanding the failure mechanisms of refractories exposed to various
harsh thermo-chemical environments. This will be achieved using combinations
of XRF, ICP and XRD
• Perform and/or coordinate chemical analysis of samples submitted to the lab in
accordance with generally accepted chemical practices. Report results in a clear
and organized fashion.
• Engage with internal customers to provide them with a thorough understanding of
methodologies used during the analysis of samples provided by these
• Partner with analytical lab and other R&D peers to determine the current and
future needs of the lab and to identify the equipment and procedures to perform
those functions.
• Maintain a safe and organized work environment by taking the lead in site safety
& 5-S programs.
• Supervise and develop analytical technicians.
• Create and maintain SOP’s for the chemical lab.
Knowledge/Experience/Skills Needed
The desired candidate will have:
• The minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, a Master’s degree or higher
is preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory.
• Extensive expertise with modern XRF (fused bead and powder pellets)
spectrometers, including substantial knowledge of the theory, sample preparation
techniques, and software.
• Significant experience with ICP-AES, LECO and other analytical chemistry
• Experience with refractory industry materials, including SiC, and organic
compounds and related test methods/instrumentation would be a plus.
• The ability to troubleshoot analytical issues, equipment and software.
• Attention to detail, documentation, and safety.

planning tasks, assignments and assistant’s duties, and passionate about continuing
