Purdue University Life Science Open House

Undergrads are invited to attend the PULSe Fall Open House on Friday, November 3, 2017This open house serves as an opportunity to introduce students to the Purdue University Interdisciplinary Life Science Ph.D. Program (PULSe).  PULSe provides opportunities for an interdisciplinary graduate experience in the basic life sciences for Ph.D. students.

Our day of activities will include a meet the faculty session, lunch with current students, and a tour of lab facilities. Students will gain exposure to some of the life science research being done at Purdue, while they are also given an opportunity to talk with faculty and students to familiarize themselves with the PULSe Program.

Faraday Technology Inc. 25th Aniversary

Faraday Technology Inc. will celebrate our 25th anniversary on November 9th, 2017 from approximately 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM with an “Open House” for family and business associates.

Position Announcement: Tenure-track search in organic/polymer chemistry at the Assistant Professor rank

Job Details:
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for a tenure-track position in Organic Chemistry or Polymer Chemistry/Polymer Science to begin in August 22, 2018. Applicants with interdisciplinary interests related to material science and/or synthesis of polymers will be considered.
• A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a very closely related discipline.
• One year of teaching experience (which may be satisfied by two semesters of half-time teaching assistantships in graduate school).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience and interest in mentoring undergraduate research.
• Ability to effectively teach general chemistry courses.
• Ability to effectively teach upper-level lecture and lab courses in organic and polymer chemistry.
• Ability to contribute to existing program emphases and/or experience with instrumentation.
Teaching responsibilities include lecture and lab courses in general chemistry, and upper-level courses in organic and polymer chemistry. Curriculum development in organic and polymer chemistry is expected. The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research program that involves undergraduate students. Additional responsibilities include seeking external funding for undergraduate research, academic advising, performing committee service and other duties as assigned.
Department and College Information:
The Chemistry Department currently consists of 11 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 6 instructional academic staff. The Department offers American Chemical Society (ACS) certified BS degrees in Chemistry, and also offers a Chemistry Minor and a 2-year Pre-Pharmacy Program. The Department has approximately 120 majors and graduates 15 to 20 students per year. Faculty within the program work closely with students and provide several opportunities for undergraduate research. The College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (EMS) enrolls approximately 3,500 students in BS degrees in Chemistry, Mathematics, Broad-field Science, Computer Science, and Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems, and ABET-accredited BS degree programs in Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical and Software Engineering, and Engineering Physics. The College also offers an online Master of Engineering program which has been designated as a “Best Buy” in online education.

POSITION: Assistant Professor of Biochemistry

EFFECTIVE DATE: August 20, 2018 (Fall Semester)

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Biochemistry or closely related discipline.

Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2018.

Strong record of research productivity; demonstrated potential for developing and sustaining an independent externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate (MS) students leading to peer-reviewed publications; potential for effective teaching in biochemistry.

Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

Post-doctoral research experience; preference will be given to candidates

QUALIFICATIONS:  who can complement research interests of existing faculty and/or utilize existing instrumentation.

DUTIES: Teach undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in biochemistry and graduate level courses in the area of specialty; supervise undergraduate and graduate student research; develop and sustain an independent and externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students leading to publications (research start-up funds are available); participate in service to the department, university, and community.

University of Michigan 41st Annual Macromolecular Science & Engineering Symposium

October 18th: Beyond Academia – Scientific Career Pathways

A half-day (afternoon start) featuring short-courses on career pathways and a panel with industry representatives. The short course is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students, an evening networking dinner will be held following the talks.

October 19th: Emergent Polymer Science & Engineering

The research symposium and poster sessions, featuring invited talks by faculty and students. Industrial sponsors will have booth space during the poster sessions to connect with students. Poster awards will be given at the conclusion of the event at 3 PM.

Participants are able to register for both or just one of the days of the symposium. The poster session is open to all students and post-doctoral researchers and covers research in all areas of polymer science and engineering.  There is no registration fee. Two poster submissions will be elevated to invited talks, providing a fantastic opportunity to showcase research to leaders in the field.
